📖 About Mesa Public Library — Main Library
Mesa Public Library traces its roots to 1906, when a small collection of donated books was shelved in the basement of Gurley's Meat Market. The city formally assumed management in 1926, and in 1929 the library opened with 500 volumes and a single librarian. Its first permanent home arrived in 1937 inside the WPA-built Mesa City Hall at 1st Street and Macdonald, constructed by workers hired through the federal Works Progress Administration. The library moved to its current four-branch system, with this Main Library built on 1st Street near Centennial Way in 1981. Today the Main Library circulates millions of items annually and offers the THINKspot makerspace at all branch locations — each equipped with a 3D printer, laser cutter, sewing machine, vinyl cutter, and a professional video and audio studio on an iMac.
