📖 About Carnegie Library of McKeesport

Andrew Carnegie answered a personal letter from the Women's Club of McKeesport in 1899 with a $50,000 gift, and architect William J. East delivered one of the region's finest Gilded Age library buildings three years later. The library opened July 15, 1902, with 3,000 volumes under librarian Emily Kuhn; the collection has since grown past 110,000 items. A historic-landmark designation in the late 1970s protected the building's ornate stonework, and later renovations added an elevator, ADA accessibility, and a fully rewired computer lab. The library also serves nearby communities through its White Oak and Duquesne branches. Today it anchors the Allegheny County Library Association network, giving cardholders shared borrowing rights across dozens of southwestern Pennsylvania libraries.
