The Story of the Library in St. Paul
The Saint Paul Public Library was established by the city council on September 7, 1882, beginning with a collection of just over 8,000 books. Today it operates the downtown central library alongside a network of neighborhood branches serving communities across the city.
The downtown George Latimer Central Library opened in 1917 as part of an Italian Renaissance–style building it shares with the James J. Hill Reference Library, funded in part by railroad magnate James J. Hill. The library was renamed in 2014 to honor former mayor George Latimer for his contributions to historic preservation.
