The Story of the Library in Concordia
The Frank Carlson Library was built in 1976 and named for Concordia's most prominent citizen, Frank Carlson (1893–1987), the only Kansan to serve as Governor, U.S. Representative, and U.S. Senator. A longtime resident of Concordia, Carlson lent his name to the new library, which displays memorabilia from his life and political career alongside its circulating collection.
In 2011, coinciding with the Kansas sesquicentennial, the library used a mini-grant from the Kansas Humanities Council to renovate its Frank Carlson Room. The resulting exhibit, Frank Carlson: Prairie Politician, opened to the public on November 5, 2011, and features items such as pens used by President Lyndon B. Johnson to sign legislation and artifacts tied to Carlson's decades in public office.
