📖 About Sulligent Public Library
Sulligent Public Library opened in 1961 as part of a landmark Library Service Act demonstration project that the Alabama Public Library Service administered across Lamar, Marion, Fayette, and Tuscaloosa counties. Before that initiative, the only libraries in the region were in Fayette, Hamilton, and Tuscaloosa; the demonstration established Sulligent, Vernon, and Winfield as new public branches. The following year, Lamar and Marion counties formed the Mar-La Pioneer Regional Library, and Franklin County joined in 1962 to create what became Northwest Regional Library. Today the Sulligent branch at 514 Elm Street holds materials for all ages and offers full borrowing privileges across all Northwest Regional branches, along with Books-By-Mail service and digital access through the Alabama Virtual Library. Sulligent itself, seat of central Lamar County, has around 2,100 residents and a history tied to the railroad lines that shaped west Alabama's towns in the late 19th century.
