📖 About Auburn Public Library
The Auburn Public Library was officially chartered on October 27, 1890, when the Auburn Board of Trade appointed a committee to establish a public reading room. It opened for business on August 21, 1891, with 2,150 books, 30 newspapers, and a librarian earning $300 per year — all housed in two rented rooms in the Elm Block above the local trust company. Over more than 130 years the library has grown alongside Auburn's university-town community, relocating to its current home at 749 East Thach Avenue. Today the library holds more than 71,000 volumes, circulates nearly 241,000 items annually, and serves a population of approximately 53,000 residents. A first branch is planned to open in 2026 on Donahue Avenue, extending service to additional neighborhoods. The library's Engagement and Outreach Division operates a mobile library van that visits seven assisted living facilities and one daycare center, bringing books and digital access to homebound community members.
