📖 About Klukwan Community & School Library
The Klukwan Community & School Library reopened its doors in 2005 after a community-driven revitalization effort that transformed it into one of Southeast Alaska's most distinctive small public libraries. Located in Klukwan, home of the Chilkat Indian Village on the Haines Highway about 22 miles north of Haines, the library is a true public library open to all ages and all community members — not just tribal citizens — thanks to a partnership between the Chilkat Indian Village, the Chatham School District, and ongoing grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Native American Library Services Enhancement program and the Alaska State Library. The collection covers books, audiobooks, magazines, newspapers, and films for all ages, with particular depth in Chilkat Valley local history and materials related to Chilkat Tlingit traditions. Since 2021, the library has operated the Klukwan Digital Archives project, digitizing rare physical materials — photographs, recordings, and documents — to preserve and expand online access to Chilkat Tlingit heritage. Weekly Tuesday storytimes, movie nights, cultural events, and oral history programming make the library a year-round community hub in this village of roughly 100 residents.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Klukwan library open to non-tribal members and visitors passing through on the Haines Highway?
Yes. The Klukwan Community & School Library is open to all ages and all community members regardless of tribal affiliation. It is funded as a public library through the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the Alaska State Library, and the Chilkat Indian Village, so any resident or visitor is welcome to stop in during open hours.
What does X'úx' Daakahídi mean, and why is the library given that name?
X'úx' Daakahídi is the Tlingit name for the library and translates roughly as 'Place of Books.' The Chilkat Indian Village uses the Tlingit name alongside the English name to reflect the library's dual mission: serving everyday community needs while preserving and celebrating Chilkat Tlingit language and culture.
What is the Klukwan Digital Archives project?
Launched in 2021, the Klukwan Digital Archives project digitizes unique physical materials related to Chilkat Tlingit history, traditions, and culture — including historic photographs, oral history recordings, and documents — making them accessible online. The project is part of the library's broader effort to preserve heritage materials for future generations.
