📖 About Poplar Bluff Municipal Library District
The Poplar Bluff Municipal Library District traces its beginnings to 1915, when Mrs. M. C. Horton, president of the Poplar Bluff Bay View Reading Club, convened a meeting in her home to discuss the need for a free public library. On April 25, 1916, a membership library opened in the basement of the Criterion Theater, staffed by 14 volunteers and charging $1 a year for access. Community enthusiasm drove a successful library mill tax in 1917, giving Poplar Bluff its first publicly funded library. After relocating four more times, the library moved into its permanent home at 318 North Main Street in October 1936 — a $50,000 Colonial Revival brick building designed by architects Pleitsch and Price and constructed by Rhinehart Construction Co., hailed at its opening for its electric lights and auditorium. The Missouri Library Association held its statewide conference at the newly opened building. Expansions in 1998 and renovations in 2008 grew the building to 21,000 square feet with more than 70,000 volumes. A community-passed quarter-cent sales tax in 2012 tripled the library's budget, and in 2019 the Dr. Gus T. Ridgel Branch opened at 3398 Kanell Boulevard, providing a second full-service location for Butler County residents.
