In 1913, Allegan community leaders secured a $10,000 Carnegie Foundation grant to construct a permanent library building, and the handsome brick structure at 331 Hubbard Street opened in 1914 — one of the more than 2,500 Carnegie libraries built across the United States between 1883 and 1929. The building anchored library service in Allegan County for more than a century before the district undertook a landmark expansion designed by Quinn Evans Architects: the addition more than doubles the library's floor area while setting back respectfully from the Carnegie building's front line, using matching brick and a burnished block base to tie old and new together. Inside, the expansion introduces an early literacy area, a digital lab, a dedicated teen zone, group and solo study rooms, and a crafts program room guided by STREAM (science, technology, reading, art, and math) educational principles. The rear of the addition opens through large windows and an accessible boardwalk to the Kalamazoo River, giving patrons a reading terrace with river views rarely found in small-town libraries.
