📖 About Moundridge Public Library

The Moundridge Public Library traces its origins to a determined community service project launched in the late 1960s by the Jaycee Jaynes, a local women's organization. On February 27, 1967, the library's first board meeting appointed Jean Oltmans as librarian, and the fledgling institution opened June 5, 1967, in the old Happy Hollow schoolhouse east of Greere Auditorium, stocked entirely with donated materials and South Central Kansas Library System (SCKLS) books on loan. Legal establishment in 1968 allowed city funding, and by the end of the decade the circulating collection had quadrupled. Today the library offers books, magazines, local newspapers, DVDs, audiobooks, and wireless internet — as well as digital access through the Sunflower OverDrive Consortium and SCKLS Digital Collections — anchoring a community whose Mennonite and Swiss-German heritage shaped both the town's name (from the German 'Mundreich,' meaning 'eloquent') and its strong tradition of civic cooperation.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How did a small Kansas town end up with a library founded by a women's civic group?

In the late 1960s, the Jaycee Jaynes — the women's auxiliary of Moundridge's Jaycee chapter — chose library creation as their community service project. They secured use of the old Happy Hollow schoolhouse, collected donated books and materials, and partnered with the South Central Kansas Library System to fill the shelves. The library opened June 5, 1967, entirely through civic initiative before the city had even allocated a budget line.

Can I borrow books from other Kansas libraries on my Moundridge card?

Yes. The library participates in KICNET, Kansas's statewide interlibrary loan system, and is a member of the South Central Kansas Library System (SCKLS). You can request materials from any participating Kansas public library, and through the Sunflower OverDrive Consortium your card also unlocks thousands of eBooks and digital audiobooks via the Libby app.

What does the name 'Moundridge' mean?

The town's name is widely attributed to the German word 'Mundreich,' meaning 'eloquent' or 'gifted with speech,' reflecting the strong Mennonite and Swiss-German heritage of the community's founding settlers who arrived in McPherson County in the late 19th century.

Does Moundridge Public Library have digital collections beyond Libby?

Yes. In addition to eBooks and audiobooks via the Libby app through the Sunflower OverDrive Consortium, the library provides access to SCKLS Digital Collections — regionally digitized materials available at moundridge.digitalsckls.info — and the full SCKLS network of shared resources across more than 60 south-central Kansas libraries.
