The Story of the Library in Waianae
The Nānākuli Public Library opened on April 14, 2018 as the first public library ever built in Nānākuli, ending years in which Leeward Coast residents had to drive to Waiʻanae or Kapolei to reach a branch. The $15.5-million, Hawaiian-village-themed building — designed by architect Glenn Miura of CDS International on a three-acre site — is the only library in Hawaiʻi with signage in both Hawaiian and English. It houses room for roughly 35,000 books, 32 public computers, meeting rooms, and the Lumi ʻAukiō recording studio, added at the community's request so families can record their oral histories.
About Public Libraries in Waianae
Waianae's two branches — the Waiʻanae Public Library and the newer Nānākuli Public Library — are part of the Hawaiʻi State Public Library System (HSPLS), the only statewide public library system in the United States. A single free HSPLS library card works at all HSPLS branches across every island, and any Hawaiʻi resident (plus non-residents for a small fee) can apply in person or online. The card unlocks borrowing, public computers and Wi-Fi, and the system's full slate of digital collections and research databases.
With an HSPLS card, Waianae-coast residents can borrow eBooks and audiobooks free through Libby / OverDrive and stream and search the system's licensed research databases — homework help, newspapers, and reference tools — from any device, no trip to the branch required.
