📖 About East Lansing Public Library
The East Lansing Public Library was founded in 1923 when the Child Study Club raised $26 through a community dance and secured two boxes of donated books from the Library of Michigan, housing the collection first at Peoples Church. East Lansing made its first city appropriation of $1,500 in 1928 and hired its first professional librarian. The library moved several times before voters approved a bond in 1961 for a purpose-built facility; the current mid-century modern building at 950 Abbot Road was dedicated in 1963, featuring a dramatic saw-tooth metal-panel roof and limestone-clad entry bay recognized by the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office as part of the Michigan Modern project. Inside, Dirk Gringhuis painted a sweeping 1963 mural depicting Paul Bunyan and other American folklore characters. The library expanded in 1975 and underwent a $2 million renovation in 1995–1998.
