📖 About Pittsylvania County Public Library
Pittsylvania County Public Library (PCPL) was established in 1939 thanks to a generous donation from David K. E. Bruce and his wife and support from the county's Board of Supervisors and School Board. The main branch has been at 24 Military Drive in Chatham since 1989, and the system has grown to include the Gretna, Brosville/Cascade, and Mt. Hermon branch libraries plus the History Research Center housed in the restored 1918 Chatham rail depot at 340 Whitehead Street (operated since 2013 thanks to the Pittsylvania Historical Society). A bookmobile has served rural routes continuously since 1940, making approximately 60 stops per month. In 2021 more than 36,000 people held PCPL library cards, and the collection exceeds one million physical and digital items. The library is a department of Pittsylvania County government, governed by a 10-member volunteer Board of Trustees.
