📖 About East Orange Public Library
East Orange Public Library is the free public library of East Orange, Essex County, New Jersey, serving a city of roughly 73,000 residents. The library's history begins in 1900, when Alexander King — an East Orange resident and childhood friend of Andrew Carnegie — orchestrated the first Carnegie library grant offered in New Jersey: $50,000 to build a main library that opened January 3, 1903, designed by the firm Ackerman and Ross. That original Carnegie building at Main Street and South Munn Avenue later became the East Orange Municipal Court; the library moved to its current Main Branch at 21 South Arlington Avenue. The Franklin Branch (opened 1909, expanded 1939) and Elmwood Branch (opened 1912), both funded by subsequent Carnegie grants, also remain in service. A current renovation program is expanding and modernizing the system. The library catalog runs on Sierra (Innovative Interfaces) and cardholders enjoy free access to Libby/OverDrive eBooks, the JerseyClicks statewide database portal, and a Local History Department with yearbooks and historical archives.
