The Shelby Township Library began serving Macomb County residents in August 1972, and in April 1973 became a founding member of the Suburban Library Cooperative — the network that links public libraries throughout the county for shared cataloging and resource sharing. The library operates under Michigan eLibrary (MeL), providing patrons with access to statewide research databases funded through the cooperative. Its Afternoon Book Club holds the distinction of being the oldest library-run book club in Michigan.
