📖 About Troy Public Library
The Troy Public Library was born in September 1962 when a group of local residents opened a reading room in two rooms at Troy High School with 1,000 donated books; the Friends of the Troy Public Library formed just months earlier to help raise funds. After two moves through strip-mall storefronts on Square Lake Road and Rochester Road, the library broke ground on its permanent home at the Troy Civic Center on January 24, 1970, opening its current doors on May 16, 1971. An expansion funded by the Friends of the Library and a Kresge Foundation grant in the early 1980s added the circulation and adult services wing. By 2002 annual circulation exceeded one million items, and in 2004 the Library of Michigan awarded Troy the Citation of Excellence, ranking it the top Michigan public library serving a community of its size. The library eliminated late fees in 2022, ensuring no financial barrier separates any Troy resident from its collection. It is a member of MeLCat, Michigan's statewide resource-sharing network, and offers the Michigan Activity Pass for free and discounted admission to hundreds of state attractions.
