The Cullman County Public Library System serves Cullman, Alabama — a city of about 18,000 residents that Colonel John G. Cullmann, a German immigrant and democratic reformer, founded in 1873 as a colony for German settlers on a 349,000-acre Louisville & Nashville Railroad tract. Five German families arrived in March 1873, and the community grew into one of Alabama's fastest-growing cities, now up 23 percent since 2010. The library's mission is to "make connections in our community providing patrons with opportunities for growth, discovery, inspiration, and services to meet a multitude of individual needs." It offers a wide range of programming for children, teens and adults — from Tuesday storytimes and weekly STEAM Club challenges with Ozobots and coding activities, to yoga, knitting, Spanish conversation and multiple adult book clubs. A capital campaign is currently under way to expand the library's physical space. Cullman cardholders also access the state-funded Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) free of charge around the clock.
