📖 About Hueytown Public Library

Hueytown Public Library opened on June 7, 1969, established by Mrs. Mary Roberts at the request of Library Board Chairman Steve Christian. Its first two decades were spent in a series of improvised quarters inside City Hall — including a hallway, the Mayor's afternoon office, a room near the police department, and a space once slated for a jail cell. In October 1990 the library moved into its own standalone building in the Knight's Triangle commercial area, a renovated former Foodland grocery store between Hueytown Road and High School Road. Today the library holds approximately 54,450 volumes and circulates more than 56,000 items per year, serving a community of roughly 21,600 residents. Hueytown joined the Jefferson County Library Cooperative in the early 1980s, giving cardholders shared access to every public library in Jefferson County — over 40 locations — on a single card.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

When did Hueytown Public Library open, and how did it get its start?

The library officially opened on June 7, 1969, when Mrs. Mary Roberts was asked by Library Board Chairman Steve Christian to establish it. Its first home was a small hallway inside Hueytown City Hall — the collection later migrated through the Mayor's afternoon office, a room next to it, a space originally intended for a jail cell, and an area beneath City Hall near the police department, before finally moving into its own building in October 1990.

What building does the library occupy now, and where is it located?

In October 1990 the library moved into a renovated former Foodland grocery store in the Knight's Triangle area of Hueytown, between Hueytown Road and High School Road. The address is 1372 Hueytown Road, Hueytown, AL 35023. The move freed up the previous space under City Hall for Hueytown Police Department expansion.

Is a Hueytown library card accepted at other Jefferson County libraries?

Yes. Hueytown Public Library is a member of the Jefferson County Library Cooperative, which operates a 'one county – one library card' system. A card issued at Hueytown is accepted at all 40+ public library locations across Jefferson County, and also gives you access to shared digital resources including Libby (OverDrive), hoopla, and dozens of online research databases.

What digital resources can I access from home with a Hueytown library card?

With your JCLC card you can borrow ebooks and audiobooks through Libby and stream content instantly through hoopla — both free, no waitlists. All Alabama residents can also access the Alabama Virtual Library (AVL) at avl.lib.al.us, a state-funded portal of research databases and reference tools, free 24/7 without a library card.
