Mesquite Library opened in November 1982 in the Paradise Valley Village neighborhood of northeast Phoenix, designed by Will Bruder — one of Arizona's most recognized architects. The original building was substantially expanded in May 1998 by richärd + bauer architecture, bringing the total footprint to 19,875 square feet and earning the 1999 Crescordia Award for Environmental Excellence, given by the Valley Forward Association. The outdoor garden showcases Whorlpath, a terrazzo floor piece by artist Lew Alquist commissioned through the Phoenix Arts Commission Public Art Program. Mesquite is the only Phoenix branch to offer the Sit, Stay, Read program, pairing emerging young readers with certified therapy dogs so children can practice reading aloud in a calm, non-judgmental setting.
