📖 About Algiers Regional Library

Algiers Regional Library serves the West Bank of the Mississippi River from 3014 Holiday Drive in Algiers. It first opened on April 19, 1966 as the prototype for the New Orleans Public Library's ambitious regional expansion plan — a 13,100-square-foot 'library for the future' with a 90-seat auditorium and capacity for 30,000 volumes. For four decades it was the primary library resource for the Algiers community, the largest of New Orleans's historic neighborhoods and the only part of the city on the west side of the river. Hurricane Katrina caused extensive facade damage and ultimately led to demolition of the original structure in 2010. A new, expanded two-story building opened on the same Holiday Drive site in July 2012, returning a full-service regional library to the West Bank after a seven-year gap. Today it is the larger of two NOPL locations in Algiers — the other being the smaller Hubbell Library in Algiers Point — and it remains the go-to resource library for the approximately 25,000 residents it serves. Among its long-standing offerings is the West Bank Book Club, one of the library system's longest-running community programs.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

What happened to the original Algiers Regional Library during Hurricane Katrina?

Hurricane Katrina caused extensive damage to the original 1966 building on Holiday Drive. The structure was eventually demolished in 2010, and the current expanded two-story library opened on the same site in July 2012 after roughly seven years of closure.

Is Algiers Regional the only library on the West Bank of New Orleans?

No, but it is the larger of two NOPL locations in Algiers. The other is the Hubbell Library in Algiers Point, a smaller neighborhood branch. Algiers Regional functions as the primary resource library for the approximately 25,000 residents of the West Bank's Algiers area.

What makes Algiers Regional a 'regional' library?

When it opened in 1966, Algiers Regional was designed as the prototype for a new generation of larger NOPL branches intended to serve entire residential districts rather than single neighborhoods. The original building was 13,100 square feet with a 90-seat auditorium — significantly larger than the system's smaller branches — and the rebuilt 2012 facility continues that regional-library model.

Does Algiers Regional have a book club or ongoing programs?

Yes. The West Bank Book Club at Algiers Regional is one of the longest-running community programs in the New Orleans Public Library system. The branch also hosts storytimes, youth programs, and a full calendar of community events.
