One of the oldest branches still serving New Orleans, the Nix Library has stood at Carrollton and Willow since 1930 — a Depression-era gift from three brothers in memory of their parents, and one of the first branches to reopen after Hurricane Katrina.

📖 About Nix Library

The Nix Library opened on December 1, 1930, as the sixth facility of the New Orleans Public Library, at the corner of South Carrollton Avenue and Willow Street. It exists because of a 1928 gift from brothers James, Ralph, and John Nix, who donated the corner lot in memory of their parents; that donation freed up $20,000 the city had set aside for land so the money could go toward construction instead. The branch answered years of advocacy by Carrollton residents and library officials who had pressed through the 1920s for a neighborhood library of their own. Nearly a century later it still anchors the Carrollton neighborhood near the Riverbend and the streetcar line. It came through Hurricane Katrina with only minor flooding and was one of the first New Orleans Public Library locations to reopen, about two months after the storm. In 2021 and 2022 the historic one-room building underwent a major accessibility renovation — adding an accessible restroom, a wheelchair lift, and automatic doors — and reopened with a ribbon-cutting on September 8, 2022.
