📖 About Hollywood Library
Hollywood Library is one of the most storied branches of Multnomah County Library, tracing its roots to 1917 when neighbors in the Rose City Park area organized a reading room at 1236 Sandy Road. A permanent building opened in 1926 at NE Hancock Street, and the branch was officially renamed Hollywood Library in 1959 to reflect its service area. In 2002 the library moved to its current four-story mixed-use building at 4040 NE Tillamook Street — the first collaboration of its kind in Portland, pairing a full public library with residential housing above. Following voter approval of a $387 million county bond in 2020, Hollywood Library closed in 2025 for interior refresh renovations and reopened in 2026 with an upgraded children's area, improved technology, and a striking new mural by Kyler Martz honoring Beverly Cleary, the Newbery Medal-winning author who grew up in this neighborhood and set her Ramona and Henry Huggins books on the streets nearby.
