📖 About Albina Library

Albina Library began in 1906 as a small reading room of roughly 100 books, and in 1912 grew into a Carnegie-funded branch on NE Knott Street known for a Spanish Renaissance stucco design and collections in German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian and Polish. In March 2023 the branch closed under Multnomah County's voter-approved $387 million capital bond, and it reopened in 2025 at a new address on NE Russell Street. The rebuilt library added about 22,000 square feet, making it the county's second-largest public library. Its new spaces include an outdoor courtyard, large community meeting rooms, a dedicated teen area, a children's space, upgraded technology and commissioned art installations. Long an anchor in North Portland's historically Black Albina neighborhood, the branch was rebuilt with an explicit focus on serving communities that have faced disenfranchisement. Today it operates on regular hours, open seven days a week.
