📖 About Central Library — Multnomah County Library
Central Library is the flagship of the Multnomah County Library system, which traces its roots to the Mercantile Library Association founded by Leland H. Wakefield in 1864 and the Portland Public Library of 1891 — the two merged in 1902 to form the first free, tax-supported library in Oregon. The current building at 801 SW 10th Avenue opened September 6, 1913, designed in the Georgian Revival style by Albert E. Doyle (Doyle, Patterson & Beach), and was one of the first libraries in the United States to feature an open-plan floor layout. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979 and celebrated its centennial in 2013. A major structural renovation from 1994 to 1997 moved services temporarily to the TransCentral site on SW Columbia Street; a second refresh completed in 2023–2024 under the voter-approved $387 million capital bond added a new teen space, improved ADA access, new restrooms, updated furniture, terrace space, and refreshed carpeting. Today Central Library holds over 1.9 million items system-wide and offers 130-plus public computers, microfilm readers, three community rooms, the John Wilson Special Collections, a Friends Library Store, and multilingual services in Spanish, Chinese, and Vietnamese.
