The City Heights/Weingart Library opened in November 1998 as part of the City Heights Initiative, a public-private partnership between the City of San Diego and Price Charities, and it was named in honor of philanthropist Ben Weingart. The branch is best known as the busiest library in the San Diego system for public computer use, with 34 internet workstations and a bank of Chromebooks that stay in near-constant demand. Attached to the library is the City Heights Performance Annex, a 50-by-50-foot black-box theater that hosts dance and music performances as well as lessons, making it a genuine neighborhood cultural hub rather than just a book stop. Meeting rooms seating 63 and 120 people, a small study room, and a large front patio give community groups room to gather. The collection includes distinctive Urban Fiction and Smart Investing holdings alongside the standard branch offerings. Serving a neighborhood where dozens of languages are spoken, the branch functions as a front door to city services for many recent arrivals.
