The Clayton Library, Center for Genealogical Research is one of Houston Public Library's special collections and is consistently named one of the top ten genealogical libraries in the nation. It occupies a two-block campus in the heart of the Museum District, anchored by the former Clayton House residence and an adjacent modern library building added in 1988 and deliberately designed to complement the style of the historic house. The collection is national and international in scope, spanning roughly 100,000 research volumes, more than 3,000 periodical titles, and an extensive microfilm holding of census records, ship passenger lists, military service records, and state and local records. A dedicated onsite Family History Research Center gives visitors access to subscription databases such as Ancestry.com and Fold3, digitized FamilySearch resources, a vertical file of genealogical documents, and a collection of more than 15,000 published and unpublished family histories. Professional genealogy staff provide one-on-one consultations to help researchers trace lineages across those international resources.
