📖 About Central Library

The Central Library is the flagship of the Seattle Public Library system, an 11-story, 362,987-square-foot landmark of glass and steel that opened to the public on May 23, 2004. It was designed by Rem Koolhaas and Joshua Prince-Ramus of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) in collaboration with Seattle's LMN Architects, at a cost of roughly $165.9 million that included a $20 million gift from Bill Gates. Its most celebrated feature is the Books Spiral, where the Dewey Decimal nonfiction collection runs across the sixth through ninth floors on one continuous, gently sloping ramp of shelving, so browsers never break the sequence by riding an elevator. Other signature spaces include the vivid Red Floor on level four, the Norcliffe Foundation Living Room on level three, and the Charles Simonyi Mixing Chamber, a technology floor lined with computer stations. Wrapped in nearly 10,000 glass panels and drawing more than two million visitors in its first year, the building earned a national AIA Honor Award for Architecture in 2005 and remains one of the most acclaimed public buildings in the United States.
