📖 About Columbia Branch

The Columbia Branch opened on December 30, 1915, and holds the distinction of being the smallest of the libraries Seattle built with gifts from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie, whose $35,000 grant covered both construction and furniture. Designed by architects W. Marbury Somervell and Harlan Thomas in a Beaux-Arts, Georgian Revival style, the original brick building followed a compact one-room plan with separate areas for adults and children and a basement auditorium for community meetings. Over the decades the branch reflected Seattle's own history: it was renovated in 1931 just before Depression-era budget cuts, and during World War II its basement auditorium served as a neighborhood air-raid shelter. A major 1986 remodel funded by the 1984 '1-2-3' bond issue was followed by a 2004 expansion under the voter-approved Libraries for All program, which added onto the rear of the historic structure and roughly doubled its size. Today the building stands within the Columbia City Landmark District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, blending its original 1915 Carnegie room with modern additions.
