📖 About South End Branch
Library service in the South End began in 1877 in the basement of the Mercantile Library Association at West Newton and Tremont Streets, moving several times before landing at its current home on June 7, 1971. The 1971 building at 685 Tremont Street was designed by the Philadelphia firm Mitchell/Giurgola and included an adjacent community park. A 1990s renovation added an elevator, and a 2020 refresh introduced new flooring, varied seating, a teen area and device charging stations. In late April 2022 a flood destroyed all mechanical equipment in the basement; a second flood followed, and the City of Boston determined that a full replacement was warranted rather than repair. The architectural firm Utile is designing a new branch with community input. In the meantime, FOSEL (Friends of the South End Library) continues to organise pop-up programming, and BPL card holders retain full access to digital resources.
