When the South Boston Branch opened in April 1872 in the Masonic building at 372 West Broadway, it became the second branch library established anywhere in the United States — only months after the BPL's own East Boston Branch set the world precedent. After the Masonic building was sold in 1948, the branch spent years in a temporary storefront on West Broadway before that space was destroyed by fire in May 1957. The present building at 646 East Broadway opened on October 31, 1957, absorbing the former City Point Branch into a single consolidated location. Today it serves South Boston — historically one of Boston's most tightly-knit Irish-American neighborhoods — with a multilingual collection that includes Irish-language books and materials for adults and children, a grand piano for concerts, historical Boston maps displayed throughout, and a walled courtyard garden for outdoor programming.
