📖 About Benjamin Franklin Branch Library

The Benjamin Franklin Branch traces its origins to an 1899 delivery station at a Boyle Heights drugstore and was formally established in 1910 as the first branch library in Los Angeles. A Carnegie-funded building was completed in 1916, and during the Depression the branch reached extraordinary use, with circulation climbing to roughly 316,585 in 1932–33 as unemployed residents filled its reading rooms. For decades it was a genuine cultural crossroads of the East Side, serving the Jewish, Japanese American, and Mexican American communities of Boyle Heights and holding materials in Russian, Yiddish, German, French, Polish, and Spanish. The aging Carnegie structure suffered earthquake and age-related damage and was replaced by the current building, which opened in the mid-1970s on the same East 1st Street site. Today the branch is known for its Spanish-language and zine collections. It is currently closed for a major renovation expected to run until 2027, with limited pop-up service offered on Tuesdays at Boyle Heights City Hall across the street.
