The McAllen Public Library traces its roots to November 12, 1932, when the McAllen Study Club, led by Mrs. W.H. Moon, opened a one-room collection at the local Chamber of Commerce with just 60 books and Eleanor Hambrick as volunteer librarian. The system grew steadily — gaining municipal status in 1944, moving into a dedicated building on N. Main Street in 1950 dedicated as a memorial to McAllenites who served and died in World War II, and expanding to three locations in 2001 with the addition of the Lark and Palm View branch libraries. The leap to national prominence came on December 10, 2011, when the current Main Library opened in a repurposed big-box retail building at Nolana and 23rd Street, designed by Minneapolis firm Meyer, Scherer & Rockcastle (MSR Design) with BSG Architects as architect of record. At 124,500 square feet — the largest single-story library in the United States at the time of its opening — the project converted warehouse space into an intimate, human-scale environment through a central wood-ceiling service spine, color-coded quadrants for children, adults, teens, and community meeting rooms, and sustainable materials chosen for optimal indoor air quality.
