📖 About Ponce Municipal Library
The Ponce Municipal Library is the oldest public library in Puerto Rico, tracing its roots to the Gabinete de Lectura founded by writer Alejandro Tapia y Rivera in 1869–1870. Formally constituted as a municipal library in 1890, it has served the residents of Ponce — Puerto Rico's second-largest city and cultural capital known as La Perla del Sur — for more than 150 years. The modern main branch, officially named Biblioteca Municipal Mariana Suárez de Longo, opened in August 2007 on Boulevard Miguel Pou in Barrio San Antón. The $14-million facility, designed by architect Juan Dalmau Sambolín, features a virtual education center with more than 30 digital services, a children's reading corner (Mi Rincón de Lectura), a youth library, wireless internet access in the courtyard, and gallery spaces that host rotating art and cultural exhibitions.
