📖 About Duffield Branch
The Duffield Branch opened on November 24, 1916, one of the Detroit Public Library branches financed by steel philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. It was designed by Detroit architect Marcus R. Burrowes, who shaped several of the system's early branch buildings, and rises as a large two-story structure faced in Bedford limestone. The branch is named for Divie B. Duffield, who served on the Detroit Library Commission in the early twentieth century. More than a century later it continues to serve the West Grand Boulevard neighborhood with book clubs, community meeting space, and youth programming. The building stands within the historic West Grand Boulevard corridor, long associated with Detroit's African American arts and business life.
