The Story of the Library in Silver Spring
The modern Silver Spring Library opened on June 20, 2015, in a new building at 900 Wayne Avenue built at a cost of about $64 million. Its ground floor was designed to incorporate a platform for the Purple Line light-rail station, integrating the library directly into the county's future transit network.
In 2022, the branch was renamed the Brigadier General Charles E. McGee Library to honor Charles McGee, a Tuskegee Airman who had lived in Montgomery County. It is the flagship library in the Silver Spring area within the Montgomery County Public Libraries system.
