📖 About Curtis Memorial Library
Curtis Memorial Library is the public library for Brunswick and Harpswell, operated by the Brunswick Public Library Association, a nonprofit whose roots reach back to the Brunswick Library Association formed in 1883 and the Brunswick Library that opened in February 1884 with about 1,300 books. The library takes its name from ship's captain John Curtis, whose son William J. Curtis provided the land and funds for the original building that opened on Pleasant Street in 1904. A $6.2 million municipal-bond-and-donation project in 1999 reopened the library as a 44,000-square-foot facility, and Cornerstones of Science was founded at Curtis that same year. Today the library runs on a fiber-optic connection with public computers, a Creative Hive makerspace, meeting and study spaces, and the volunteer-run Twice-Told Tales bookstore on Maine Street. As a member of the Minerva shared catalog and the statewide MaineCat network, a Curtis card reaches millions of items across more than a hundred Maine libraries.
