📖 About Loveland Public Library

Loveland Public Library has served its community since 1903, when the Women's Improvement Society established the city's first organized lending library in the home of founding librarian Anna Duffield. A Carnegie grant funded a purpose-built library that opened in 1908; the current building in the Civic Center Municipal Complex at 300 N. Adams Avenue opened in September 1987 and was dramatically expanded in 2012 with a 24,700-square-foot addition — a renovation that earned LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the first City of Loveland building to achieve that designation. The library holds 137,511 volumes, circulates nearly 740,000 items annually, maintains 45+ community partnerships, and houses a Makerspace, a first-floor Local History and Genealogy Room, and an art gallery in the Central Galleria.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Loveland Public Library have a seed library?

Yes. The Seed Library is housed in an old card catalog in the Library Galleria, with vegetable seeds arranged alphabetically, and patrons may select up to 10 free seed packets per visit. Gardeners are encouraged to let a plant or two go to seed and return some seeds (with a filled-out label) to the return basket so the collection becomes self-sustaining. For more on borrowing beyond books, see seed libraries.

Does the Loveland Public Library have a Valentine's Day connection?

Loveland is world-famous as the 'Sweetheart City' for its Valentine's Day re-mailing program — one of the world's largest, now in its 80th year — but the re-mailing is administered by the Loveland Chamber of Commerce and volunteer stampers, not the library. The library is part of the same civic fabric and participates in seasonal Valentine's-themed programming and showcases related community art in its Central Galleria.

What makes the Loveland Public Library building historically significant?

The library traces its roots to a Carnegie grant: Loveland's first purpose-built library opened in 1908 with Carnegie funding on the corner of 6th Street and Cleveland Avenue. The current building, which opened in September 1987 in the Civic Center Complex, underwent a major 24,700-square-foot expansion completed in 2012 that earned LEED Gold certification — the first such designation for any City of Loveland building, achieving 23.1% energy savings over standard construction.

Can I use the Makerspace without any prior experience?

Yes — the Makerspace on the library's second floor is open to all cardholders at no cost and no prior experience is required. Equipment includes a 3D printer, CNC mill, Adobe Creative Cloud suite, ZBrush for 3D sculpting, an iMac, a Windows Surface Studio, a 2D Art Digitizer, audio recording gear, and digital drawing tablets. You can reserve the space for up to four hours per day online.

Does the library serve people researching Larimer County family history?

Yes. The first-floor Local History and Genealogy Room holds a curated collection of genealogy books and provides in-library access to Ancestry.com and MyHeritage. Every Thursday from 1 to 5 PM, trained volunteers from the Larimer County Genealogical Society are on hand to help patrons research family history at no charge. The library also sponsors Saturday genealogy classes several times a year.
