📖 About Ocean Beach Library
Ocean Beach has had a library since 1916, when it first opened in a storefront on Abbott Street. The current building at 4801 Santa Monica Avenue was constructed in 1928 for just $18,697 and expanded in 1962 to its present size of roughly 5,000 square feet, with a further renovation in 2012. Two large decorative urns installed out front in 1993 hold time capsules of objects from across the city, scheduled to be opened in 2043. Despite its small footprint, the branch is a beloved fixture of the eclectic, beach-loving OB community and offers a Seed Library that lets patrons borrow and share seeds. The library is scheduled to close in late summer 2026 for a $14.45 million expansion that will remodel the historic building and add a new wing with a community meeting room, study rooms, and a teen area, with reopening anticipated in Summer 2028.
