📖 About Ocean Beach Library
The Ocean Beach Library has served San Diego's most bohemian beachside neighborhood since 1916, when community members led by Kate Spani, principal of Ocean Beach Elementary School, raised $200 at a town meeting to rent a single storefront room on Abbott Street. The current Spanish/Monterey-style building at the corner of Santa Monica Avenue and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard was designed by architect Robert W. Snyder — a student of the renowned William Templeton Johnson — and opened October 28, 1928, at a cost of roughly $15,000. Snyder's design won an AIA Certificate of Honor in 1933, and the San Diego City Council officially designated the building San Diego Historic Landmark No. 565 on December 20, 2002. The library was expanded in 1961 to add a children's wing and renovated in 2012. Beginning September 1, 2026, the library is closed for a $14.45 million expansion that will more than double usable space — adding a community meeting room for 100, a teen area, a maker space, study rooms, an outdoor patio, and new restrooms — with reopening anticipated in Summer 2028. During construction, holds and services are available at the nearby Point Loma/Hervey Library at 3701 Voltaire Street.
