📖 About Black Canyon City Community Library
The Black Canyon City Community Library is a branch of the Yavapai County Free Library District (established 1987), tucked along the historic Old Black Canyon Highway in this unincorporated Yavapai County community about 22 miles north of Phoenix off I-17. The branch circulates over 17,000 items a year and hosts more than 300 programs annually for a community of roughly 2,600 residents. Out front stands the community's beloved Story Teller Sculpture — a 25-foot repurposed gasoline storage tank hand-etched with Kokopelli designs by local welder Wesley 'Smitty' Smith and dedicated in May 1995 at the initiative of the Canyon Culture Guild. After a microburst toppled the sculpture in April 2024, it was restored with a new steel support system and concrete pad and re-dedicated on May 29, 2025 — a testament to how central this branch and its icon are to Black Canyon City's identity. As a member of the Yavapai Library Network, cardholders can borrow from more than 50 libraries across the county and access the statewide Digital Arizona Library (DAZL) and Reading Arizona collections.

The Story Teller Sculpture is a 25-foot repurposed gasoline storage tank hand-etched with Kokopelli designs by Black Canyon City welder and folk artist Wesley 'Smitty' Smith (born 1922, died 1997), commissioned by the Canyon Culture Guild and first dedicated in May 1995 in the presence of County Supervisor Bill Feldmeier.
