📖 About Haines Borough Public Library
The library began in 1928, when the Haines Women's Club opened a reading room in a tiny 12-by-12-foot building at the Alaska Steamship Office. The group incorporated as the Haines Library Association on May 22, 1931, later moving into a small frame house on Main Street. The community built the current library and opened it in August 1958 with volunteer labor, and the Haines Borough took over its operation in the early 1970s as part of the valley's education system. Two grant-funded additions, in 1979 and 1987, expanded the building through the Alaska Division of Libraries and Museums. Today it serves a borough of roughly 1,700 residents on the northern Alaska Panhandle.
