The Story of the Library in Birmingham
The Birmingham Public Library traces its roots to 1886, when school superintendent John H. Phillips established it as an adjunct of the city's public schools. After a 1925 fire destroyed the earlier collection, the library opened its landmark Central Library building in 1927 — an imposing Neo-classical structure of Indiana limestone whose main research room is adorned with murals painted by artist Ezra Winter. That 1927 building served as the main library for 57 years and was later renamed the Linn-Henley Research Library, housing the system's special collections and government documents.
In 1984 a new 133,000-square-foot Central Library building was completed and joined to the original 1927 structure by a crosswalk; it holds most of the Central Library's circulating and general reference collections along with technical services for the whole system. Today the Birmingham Public Library is Alabama's largest public library system, operating the Central Library plus 18 neighborhood branches for a total of 19 locations.
