📖 About Abbott Memorial Library

The Abbott Memorial Library was constructed in 1903 and opened to the public in 1905 through the generosity of the Abbott family, who donated both land and money for the building. It serves the Town of Pomfret — a rural Windsor County community in the Upper Connecticut River Valley — and welcomes non-residents as well as locals. The library's architectural distinction earned it a place on the National Register of Historic Places. During the 1970s and 1980s the library doubled as the school library for local students; after Pomfret's consolidated school opened in 1991, it continued its close partnership with the school through active children's programming. Today the library holds books, DVDs, audiobooks, and a local history collection, and offers museum and park passes providing free or reduced admission to Vermont cultural venues including Billings Farm & Museum, VINS, the American Precision Museum, ECHO Leahy Center, and Vermont State Parks. Homebound delivery service ensures the collection reaches all members of the community.
