📖 About Monongahela Area Library
The Monongahela Area Library at 813 West Main Street is the public library for Monongahela, New Eagle, Carroll Township, Union Township, Nottingham Township, and Finleyville — the communities of the Ringgold School District in Washington County. The library's story began in 1899 when local residents arranged for a Carnegie deposit collection to be housed in the E. J. Kelly Bookstore on Main Street; that seed grew into the Carnegie Free Library of Monongahela, which opened in 1902. Over the following decades the library relocated to City Hall (1920, renamed Monongahela Public Library) and then to 900 Main Street (1946, renamed Byers Memorial Library in honor of a bequest from the Byers family). After a fundraising campaign spanning more than a decade, the current building opened at 813 West Main Street in 1987 under the name Monongahela Area Library. Today it holds over 30,800 in-house items and connects cardholders to nearly 800,000 more through the WAGGIN shared catalog of Washington, Greene, and Fayette county libraries.
