The Plainfield Public Library is the free public library of Plainfield, New Jersey, in Union County. It was incorporated in 1881 by a resolution of the Plainfield Common Council, and its present building at 800 Park Avenue opened to the public in 1968. In 2025-2026 the library closed for a roughly $2.3 million modernization funded through the federal Coronavirus Capital Projects Fund; it celebrated a grand reopening on June 13, 2026, unveiling flexible community rooms for programs and workshops, expanded main-level floor space, upgraded Wi-Fi and public computers, and a new community plaza with a waterfall wall in place of the old interior fountain. The library is a member of the STELLA consortium (formerly LMxAC) and the MURAL (Middlesex Union Reciprocal Agreement Libraries) network, so a Plainfield card also borrows across dozens of member libraries and their shared digital collections. Its Local History & Genealogy department holds one of the largest local-history collections in Union County — roughly 1,100 linear feet of documents, photographs, maps, newspapers and records including Plainfield police logs dating back to 1874.
