The Hoboken Public Library serves New Jersey's most densely populated city from its landmark 1897 building at 500 Park Avenue — a structure listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places for its architectural and cultural significance. From 2026, the building is undergoing a planned multiyear historic restoration of its 1st floor and mezzanine interior; full services continue at the Grand Street Branch at 124 Grand Street during the project. The library holds four distinguished special collections: the Historical Collection (600+ volumes on Hoboken history plus manuscripts, maps and oral histories), the Sinatra Collection (dedicated to hometown icon Frank Sinatra), the Audio Collection (local artists' CDs from the independent Bar/None Records label), and the Hoboken Free Public Library Collection documenting the institution's own cultural history. The library received a Connecting Communities Digital Initiative award from the Library of Congress to study the Puerto Rican diaspora in Hoboken and an American Rescue Grant in 2022 to document community experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
