📖 About Traverse Area District Library
The Traverse Area District Library grew out of Traverse City's 1905 Carnegie Library on Sixth Street, funded by a $20,000 gift from Andrew Carnegie. As the community outgrew that building, voters approved a new library in 1996 and the current Woodmere Avenue main library opened in 1999; the district vacated the old Carnegie building, which was later renovated as part of the Grand Traverse Heritage Center. Today the Woodmere library is the hub of a six-location district system serving Grand Traverse County, with the East Bay and Kingsley branches plus the member libraries in Fife Lake, Interlochen and on Old Mission Peninsula. The Woodmere building is also the regional home of the award-winning Talking Book Library, which serves visually and physically impaired patrons across Grand Traverse and seven surrounding counties.
