📖 About Newton Free Library
The Newton Free Library is the public library of Newton, Massachusetts, a Middlesex County city just west of Boston. Its roots reach back to March 1865, and the original library opened at 414 Centre Street on June 17, 1870, one of the first purpose-built free libraries in the state. After more than a century in that building, the library moved in September 1991 into the current 91,405-square-foot Neo-Georgian building beside Newton City Hall at the corner of Homer and Walnut Streets. Today it holds a collection of roughly 450,000 items and lends out more materials than any other single library building in Massachusetts, with an annual circulation approaching two million. The library is a member of the Minuteman Library Network, a consortium of more than 40 Massachusetts libraries whose shared catalog lets a Newton card place holds on well over a million additional titles delivered between branches.
