📖 About Kansas City, Kansas Public Library — Main Library
The Kansas City, Kansas Public Library (KCKPL) traces its roots to 1893, when the Kansas legislature gave the Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education authority to administer a public library. The current Main Library at 625 Minnesota Avenue stands on the site of the original Carnegie library, whose cornerstone was laid on September 6, 1902, drawing more than 3,000 people and illuminated for the first time by new electric arc lights. By 1899 the library had come fully under the Board of Education, an arrangement that continues today. Since 1895, twenty individuals have served as director; the current director is Laura Hunt Pellegrino (2024–present). The Main Library is the flagship of five locations across Wyandotte County and houses the Kansas Collection — a research archive open Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons — along with a Seed Library, one-on-one skill sessions, youth literacy programs, and free digital platforms including Hoopla, Kanopy, Flipster (digital magazines), and The New York Times.
