The Main Library anchors the Miami-Dade Public Library System, one of the largest urban library systems in the United States. The building stands within the Philip Johnson-designed Miami-Dade Cultural Center plaza, a Postmodern civic complex that opened in 1983 alongside HistoryMiami (formerly the Historical Museum of Southern Florida) and the Miami Art Museum. The library's 250,000-square-foot facility includes the 120-seat Arva Parks McCabe Auditorium, a CareerSource South Florida employment center, mobile printing stations, and designated spaces for homework help and tutoring offered every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. MDPLS card-holders access the system's full digital catalog — Libby/OverDrive, Hoopla, Freegal Music, and the Miami Herald and New York Times collections — along with the statewide Florida Electronic Library.
