📖 About Pine Bluff Public Library
Founded in 1913 through the efforts of the Pine Bluff chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Pine Bluff Public Library has anchored civic life in Jefferson County for over a century. In 1979 an Interlocal Agreement between the City of Pine Bluff and Jefferson County unified resources into the countywide system that now operates five locations serving all 885 square miles of the county. The main library suffered major flood damage in 2016 and again in 2017 from an equipment failure, accelerating plans for a new building. The current 35,000-square-foot facility at 600 South Main Street — designed by Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects in association with Reed Architectural Firm and opened in November 2020 — won AIA Arkansas awards in both 2022 and 2023. Spread across three light-filled floors, it brings professional recording studios, a teaching kitchen, a makerspace, a genealogy room, and the Bill Carr Memorial Museum honoring Pine Bluff's own 1932 double Olympic gold medalist under one remarkable roof.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Who was Bill Carr, and why does the library have a museum dedicated to him?
William Arthur 'Bill' Carr (1909–1966) was a Pine Bluff native who became the first Arkansan to win two gold medals in the same Olympic Games, setting a world record of 46.2 seconds in the 400-meter sprint at the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics — a record that stood until 1948. The Pine Bluff Public Library honors him with the Bill Carr Memorial Museum, which displays his memorabilia, books, and portraits. The museum is expanding into the Jefferson County Sports Hall of Fame, inducting over 100 local athletes, coaches, and teams dating back to the 1920s.
What happened to the old library building, and when did the new one open?
The previous main library suffered major flood damage in 2016 and again in 2017 from an equipment failure, accelerating the need for a replacement. The current facility — a 35,000-square-foot glass-and-steel building at 600 S. Main Street designed by Polk Stanley Wilcox Architects — opened in November 2020, delayed from its planned March opening by COVID-19. It won AIA Arkansas Members' Choice and Merit awards in 2022 and 2023.
Can I use the recording studios or teaching kitchen without special training?
Yes — the recording studios (equipped with Apple Logic Pro X, mixing boards, and a camera with green screen) and the teaching kitchen are available to cardholders in good standing. The studios are popular with musicians and podcasters; the kitchen is used for scheduled cooking classes. Contact the Main Library at (870) 534-4802 to check availability and reserve a session.
How does the Pine Bluff Public Library serve all of Jefferson County, not just the city?
In 1979 the City of Pine Bluff and Jefferson County signed an Interlocal Agreement merging resources into the Pine Bluff & Jefferson County Library System. Today the system operates five locations — the Main Library plus branches in Watson Chapel, White Hall, Redfield, and Altheimer — serving all 885 square miles of the county. A Gateway Program card also provides reciprocal borrowing at more than 29 other Arkansas county library systems.
